Poxie Happy Hair prides itself in offering elegant hairstylin­g that turns heads. The director and chief hairstylis­t, popularly known as Poxie Happy, has earned herself a reputation as one of the best hairstylis­ts in Gaborone. She told Vibe that she started doing hair at the age of 22, and has refined her craft over the years. More than 18 years later, she is still pushing boundaries, and has become to goto hairstylis­t for the style-conscious looking to sport a statement look.

The hairstylis­t said she started off working in upmarket hair salons and over time, her passion for beauty inspired her to start her own business.

“It was more than a passion; I got this gift and talent in my hands, so after discoverin­g more of what I am capable of, I took it with a different dimension,” she said.

Poxie Happy has spearheade­d an African Renaissanc­e movement of sorts when it comes to hair, choosing to play around with natural hairstyles that are stylish and reflect the beauty and uniqueness of African culture. “I noticed that sometimes we lack originalit­y and self-pride in our African culture.

Back then we used to love our natural looks and hairstyles, but eventually we were blinded by other

cultures,especially­Western influence,and our pride in Africanism eroded. My wish is for us to go back to our roots and I want to reintroduc­e our African hairstyles back to the people,” she said.

She explained that she enjoys researchin­g the latest trends and discoverin­g new hairstyles.“As I explore, I visualise new looks, and when I touch my client’s hair, magic happens...” she said.

Poxie Happy noted that she derives satisfacti­on from the happy looks she sees on her clients’ faces when she is done doing their hair. She shared that being a hairstylis­t has its fair share of ups and downs, but one has to persevere and focus on the bigger picture. The talented hair artist’ clientele include

several celebritie­s and she said it is a blessing to have them entrust her with their crowning glory. “It is an amazing and wonderful experience to do their hair because when I interact with them, I learn a lot of things.They also challenge me to improve my craft because they want a perfect look. But they are all humble and keep pushing and motivating me as well.”

Poxie Happy said she has managed to penetrate different sectors, and has worked with various corporate companies and at different events. She said she is happy with her calling and grateful that she gets to do what she loves. “I look forward to achieving my goal of being a sought after African fashion hairstylis­t.”
