Zen says women in creative circles should be appreciated

- SUN REPORTER

Proper structures are needed to commercialise the creative sector, a development which would enable women in the creative space to get recognition and sufficient appreciation for the work that they do.

This was said by legendary music promoter, Zenzele Hirschfeld, when speaking at the recent Women in Song workshop held in Gaborone recently.

The workshop was part of the Botswana Music and Entertainment Week (BMEW) activities ahead of the Botswana Music Union (BOMU) awards that were held this past Saturday.

Hirschfeld called on government and other relevant authorities to put in place “proper structures in the creative industry as well as a system that would govern the entertainment industry to commercialise it.” She further said that the creative industry in Botswana, which is still at its infancy stage, is starting to show signs of progress as more women are taking space in the leading roles. “Back in the days the local entertainment space was largely male dominated but we are seeing women coming into the forefront which is an impressive development,” Hirschfeld said. She however noted that regardless of the strides that were made, some women were still faced with challenges in the industry saying ‘sometimes beauty surpassed intelligence,’ indicating that at times women are celebrated more for their physical beauty instead of their intelligence, skills and talent. She also said at least women are fighting this culture by proving their mettle and working hard to ensure that their efforts and accomplishments are recognised.
