RAPED AND KILLED
21-year-old Kanye woman found in decomposed state
The Selekanyo family in Kanye is mourning the brutal death of their daughter, 21-year-old Wame Lundi Selekanyo who allegedly died at the hands of someone they knew.
In an interview with The Midweek Sun, the deceased’s family revealed that they were called on Saturday evening for their daughter’s decomposed body which was found at the foot of a hill in Mathubapula ward. She was buried the same day.
On Monday this week, murder accused, 27-year-old Phemelo Mmoshe appeared before Kanye magistrate court, charged with the murder of Selekanyo who went missing on December 2. This is the ‘friend’ who the family claims their daughter went out to meet near Mokgadi Primary School, not far from her family home and never returned home.
Deceased‘s elder sister, 23-year-old Tshwetso Selekanyo revealed that the deceased’s body was found in a decomposed state and half naked, with plant leaves covering the area of her private parts.
“Suspicions are that she was raped as she only had her top at the crime scene, wearing nothing at the bottom. The suspect who killed my sister is someone we knew, I pray that he be hanged,” Tshwetso said.
A 51-year-old neighbour to the deceased’s family narrated how she ran to avail garden tools to dig up the makeshift grave. “She was allegedly killed by a young man who has kids in the neighbourhood, he is the one who led us to the decomposed body after police interrogation,” she said.
Speaking in court, Detective Seargent Odirile Raphapha said police investigations led them to arrest the accused on Thursday last week, December 8.
“At first he denied that he knew the deceased and later confessed after police interrogation that he killed her and led police officers to the crime scene,” Raphapha said.
He said that the deceased’s body was found in a bushy area behind Mokgadi Primary School. Raphapha opposed the suspect being granted bail, stating that they are yet to locate the deceased’s cellphone which is still missing and that more statements are to be recorded from the witnesses.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Mabutho Mabutho asked court to remand the accused in custody as investigations are still at initial stages. The court ordered that the murder suspect be remanded in police custody. Mmoshe will appear for mention on December 22.
