NOSE CONTOURING MATTERS

Batwai believes in specialisation

- BY IRENE SHONE

Nose contouring is one special feature that Refilwe Batwai says sets her apart from other makeup artists.

She is a self taught make up artist and nail technician based in Palapye, who believes that the beauty industry needs specialisation.

Batwai started doing make up and nails when she was only 17-years-old after completing her BGCSE in 2010. “Make up and it’s artistry has been my passion since then. I started my trials on family members, aunts, cousins, and former school mates. By then I was doing it free of charge until I started receiving enquiries about pricing,” she says.

She adds that, that is when she decided to consider charging for this art. She first started working in salons to gain more experience.

“I met one lady who took me under her wing and taught me all about highlighting, facial contouring, lip lining, nail prep and which products to use,” she said, adding that the type of products to use play a bigger role on the final look of makeup. She is of the view that anyone can do makeup but it takes certain skills to do it the right way.

“The special feature I give full attention to while doing make up is nose contouring, and I have observed that most makeup artists don’t consider it, although it actually helps the entire look to blend in well and show off that makeup art,” she said.

She wishes to own a proper beauty studio in the future and create employment for young girls with the same passion she had while growing up. Batwae said that the Botswana’s makeup industry is growing in a tremendous manner and it fulfills her to see some local beauticians having good work relations with television stars from South Africa.
