Magagane lands the Rollers job
Sydney Magagane, a prominent figure in Botswana’s football landscape, has recently announced his departure, having completed over a decade of service in the Debswana National First Division League. Having held the positions of Secretary General and Chairman, Magagane reflects on his journey, the challenges he faced, and the valuable experiences he gained along the way.
Magagane’s football administration career began at Letlapeng FC, where he was invited to join the committee by Tariq Babitseng. As a young and energetic individual, Magagane took on the role of Secretary for the National First Division for an impressive seven years. He fondly remembers the enjoyment he derived from his work during this period.
“After serving as Secretary for seven years, I set a personal target to become Chairman and serve for four years. I wanted to leave a lasting legacy that would be remembered by all,” Magagane shared.
Recognizing the importance of knowing when to step down, Magagane made the decision to leave the position of Chairman after achieving his goal. He believed it was vital to leave while still respected by others, ensuring a positive and memorable departure. Being the youngest sports administrator in the league came with its own set of challenges. Magagane acknowledged that not everyone appreciated or respected his contributions, and some even undermined him. However, he faced these obstacles with a bold heart, focusing on his actions rather than mere words. His track record speaks for itself, earning him popularity and respect both within and outside the country.Magagane’s valuable experience and reputation led to an exceptional opportunity: being selected for the prestigious FIFA Club Management Course. He was among the first 24 individuals to achieve this distinction, a legacy he is immensely proud of. While stepping down from his role in the Debswana National First Division League, Magagane will continue to contribute to local football as the General Manager of Township Rollers. Additionally, he holds a full-time job in the private sector, showcasing his dedication to both his professional career and his passion for football.
Looking ahead, Magagane plans to pursue a Masters Degree in Football Governance through UEFA. This will further enhance his knowledge and expertise in the field, preparing him for future endeavors as a renowned football administrator.
Although Magagane dreams of working in developed football countries, he remains committed to being a valuable asset to local football. He aspires to take on the role of CEO, either within or outside the country, as he continues on his path to becoming a respected and influential figure in football administration.
