Autonomous delivery vans take off
Automation is rapidly enveloping most economies, Huawei’s Global Mobile Broadband Forum (MBBF) 2023 has revealed.
In China, Huawei is piloting an autonomous logistics delivery vehicle, through collaboration with partners.
At the just ended MBBF, Huawei demonstrated 5.5G coffee shops and logistics operations of the future, to utilise RedCap and Passive IoT technology for intelligent and automated supply solutions.
RedCap is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases. According to Huawei, the system identifies when inventory is low, and automatically places an order for replacements with the supplier, who will deliver the supplies by autonomous vehicle, all tracked and controlled with RedCap and Passive IoT tags.
“In the next three to five years demand for autonomous delivery vehicles is expected to grow. These autonomous logistics vehicles are already in a number of cities in China, facilitated by the ultra-reliable low latency capabilities of 5G. “5G-advanced networks will be able to transmit HD real-time videos from autonomous vehicles more stably and efficiently and deliver real-time instructions, such as remote situational driving and traffic light identification, more securely and reliably. This will facilitate the steady growth of these vehicles in the near future,” said Cao Ming, President of Wireless Solution, Huawei.
Huawei is optimistic that as 5.5G becomes reality, the world is moving towards 100 billion connections connecting everything and creating new experiences and delivering new services, for more innovative possibilities than ever before. Ming also highlighted that the technologies will support an intelligent digital future, as 5G evolves to become 5G-Advanced (5.5G). “These trends will include augmented and virtual reality, glasses-free 3D; self-guided vehicles; next-generation manufacturing that efficiently connects computing power between the cloud and network edge; support for technologies such as RedCap and Passive IoT and guaranteed intelligent computing everywhere.”
