Q. What is the main theme of Dhaa Botswana?

A. The main theme of the event is “We are showing the creative world what Botswana has to offer. We are here. This is us.” We believe that Botswana has so much more to offer beyond its renowned diamonds, breathtaking landscapes, and wildlife. This event is dedicated to shining a spotlight on the ancient and rich culture of Botswana, showcasing it through the lens of fashion. This theme guides the designers to infuse their creations with elements of Botswana’s culture, heritage, and traditions - encouraging a fresh and unique perspective in their designs.

Q. How will you support emerging designers, exhibitors and artists at Dhaa Botswana?

A. At Dhaa Botswana, we are committed to supporting emerging artists and designers by providing them with a platform to exhibit their work. We are in talks with some of the education institutes of Botswana – for example Gaborone Technical College - to offer mentorship opportunities, networking events, and exposure for our more nascent designers. This not only helps them gain experience but also empowers them to contribute to Botswana’s burgeoning scene. We are also in talks to bring of the

UK’s foremost African Designer/Educator (Samson Soboye) to hold a few workshops during the event for our visitors and participating designers.

Q. What will set Dhaa Botswana apart from others in the fashion industry?

A. Dhaa Botswana distinguishes itself by its unique focus on the culture and heritage of Botswana. While the fashion industry often centres around trends and aesthetics, we are placing a strong emphasis on showcasing Botswana’s ancient culture. This sets us apart and helps us tell a compelling and distinctive story. We hope to see at Traditional wear designers or an accessory designer using traditional beadwork or weaving, textiles in new and innovative ways.

Q. What does it mean for you to be the producer of this event, and what is the unique aspect that attendees should look out for?

A. I have been a producer of catwalk and exhibition events for almost 10 years – both in the UK and Nigeria, and have been an editor in chief of a panAfrican magazine. I am passionate about African and African-inspired fashion and creativity. As a producer of Dhaa Botswana, it is an immense honour and privilege continue my work in a country that is so culturally wealthy through the medium of fashion and art. What sets Dhaa Botswana apart is its emphasis on cultural immersion. Attendees can look forward to an authentic and unforgettable experience that brings together these elements in a way that truly reflects the heart and soul of Botswana. I am so proud to be a part of this. It’s a movement!

Q. How do you plan to convey the importance of Botswana’s culture at Dhaa Botswana?

A. We plan to weave the fabric of Botswana’s culture into every aspect of our event. From the fashion designs themselves to the music, art and cuisine on display – to even the location we have chosen - we aim to create an immersive experience that pays homage to the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Q. What do we hope attendees will take away from Dhaa Botswana?

A. We hope our guests and visitors will leave Dhaa Botswana with a newfound appreciation for Botswana’s creative industries, and our international guests and media deeper understanding of the country’s culture. We want them to recognize that Botswana has much more to offer the world than diamonds and natural beauty, and to foster a lasting connection with the country and its creative community. And we hope they come back again next year!

Q. How do we rate Botswana’s fashion industry, and what do we think should be improved?

A. Botswana’s fashion industry holds great potential. It’s a thriving, yet still emerging, sector with a unique cultural narrative to share. To further elevate it, there should be increased investment in fashion education and infrastructure. Supporting emerging designers with resources, mentorship, and access to international markets will be vital for growth. Additionally, fostering collaboration between local designers and global fashion networks can help Botswana’s fashion industry gain wider recognition and success on the global stage.
