War over PTA top position
The national Parent Teachers Association (PTA) has two men each claiming to be rightful chairperson of the national association.
There is Edward Moganane of Central Region and Keaboka Modise of Molepolole. Speaking to The Midweek Sun this week, Modise identified himself as the chairperson, saying Moganana was voted out of office sometime in 2020. And as his by then assistant, he is temporarily holding the fort until they go for elections.
However, Moganana has rubbished the claims, saying as far as he is concerned, he is still the national PTA chairperson. “I am still chairperson, the 2020 decision was reversed by former Education Minister,” Moganana said, adding that they will soon write a letter to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education so that the issue is put to rest. Meanwhile, this publication has realised that the current PTA committee is divided between the pro Moganana and pro Modise camps. Supporters of Moganana say they are aware of the internal fights and are adamant that Moganana remains the man in charge. Those who are for Modise say Moganana was voted out because he ran a one man show and that the committee could not handle or advise him on anything. One of the committee members, Bontshetse Mojadife representing Kgatleng region said they are just waiting to meet with the ministry and go for elections. They were voted into power in 2016 with Moganana as chairperson and Modise his deputy.
When Modise took over, the intention was for him to be interim chairperson until they go for elections as their term was for only three years. “The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted our plans and that is one of the reasons we have not been able to hold elections. “The Ministry is aware that Modise is the chairperson, Moganana is no longer with us,” she said. Asked who the PTA chairperson is, Southern Region Education Operations Director, Acro Maseko said they know Modise to be the man in charge, not Moganana.
