BOTESSA competitive in championships
He noted that there was a good turnout of schools and students participating in various codes, and the level of competition was high. This indicates that the students were prepared, eager to learn and improve, and ready to participate in the event.
“This was not just any ordinary championship. The coaches were looking for students to represent BOTESSA in the upcoming CUCSA games, which raised the level of competition amongst the students. What’s even more exciting is that the teams from the South African University (UNISA) came to compete, participating as guests, specifically in rugby,” Botumile said.
Regarding the just ended competitions, Botumile said they have observed that the organization’s relationship with South African universities is flourishing, as evidenced by the fact that they have been able to send their rugby team to South African tournaments and invited South African universities to compete in their championships this year. He added that South Africa’s excellence in rugby provides a great opportunity for BOTESSA students to learn from their experience and develop their skills.
“While we may not be on par with South Africa in rugby, our achievements should not be overlooked. For example, the women’s rugby team from the University of Botswana defeated a team from South Africa, which is a significant achievement. Additionally, many of our female rugby players go on to represent Botswana in national competitions,” he mentioned.
He also noted that this was the first time that BOTESSA had organized a swimming competition, and he was pleased with the number of participants and the high level of competition. He added that the students performed well and were able to participate in the event without any major issues.
“We were able to organize the event successfully because of the help of various local sports associations, such as the karate, rugby, boxing, swimming, and basketball associations. We act as a development platform for them, and we are happy with the overall performance of our students. We hope to continue improving in the future,” he stated.
Botumile acknowledged that while the championships were a success, there were some areas for improvement in terms of the overall packaging their products, so that sponsors understand the value of their contribution. He also noted that some institutions have limited resources, including a lack of coaches, and that the executive committee is working to address these issues.
“We would also like to highlight that in December, we will be sending men and women football teams to South Africa to compete in their football championship. We established this relationship last year, and it is an important opportunity for our students to showcase their skills and potentially be scouted by professional teams. We are also proud to be the defending champions of this tournament,” he added.
