Poetry show case to give poets platform

- BY IRENE SHONE

A night of word in poetry has been launched this past Friday courtesy of TraveLodge and Trans Cash a d Carry, to include those who prefer listening sessions.

This is a golden moment for poets to show off their talent and recite their poems. The event is called ‘Listening sessions’ and it featured the talented Mr Fangz and Lebo Daevi on a versatile open mic session. The duo never disappointed but kept the audience engaged throughout with their lovely performances.

Poetry is usually a form of expression in word and so various poems on different topics were recited on the night. Some poems focused on embracing love, some on heartbreak and others were solely Christian based, giving a wide range of choice to the attendants at the event. The interesting part of this listening session is that it allowed both the young and the old an opportunity to express themselves and share their art and talent of word.

Radio personality, Oratile Kefitlhile, also a friends with Trans also gave an excellent piece of poem leaving the crowd in awe with her fluent voice and poem. Her poem was Christian based. The ever bubbly and creative Kesolofetse Njirayafa also recited an amazing Christian based poem that impressed many.

“As a christian, my greatest influence in poetry is David the Psalmist, who wrote so many Psalms to praise God and to express his feelings about different situations he faced, including but not limited to death. When he faced possible death, he wrote in his famous Psalm, “though I walk through the valley of death, I will fear no evil”,” shared Njirayafa telling Vibe what inspired her choice of poetry that night.

She explained that her poem was specifically meant to tell the world about the wonders God has performed from the old to the new testament to this day and time.

The last stanza of the poem was about herself, something that speaks high of her creativity as an educator, a creative writer and a poet. She is of the view that, this new poetry platform is basically a right place for poets to have fun and grow as they mingle and share their talents.

“This poetry platform is a wonderful platform that presents an opportunity for poets especially, we, upcoming ones to sharpen our skills. In poetry one needs to perform regularly to improve their craft,” she said adding that she intends to go back for more sessions in the future to improve her craft of poetry. She also believes that, poetry in Botswana is coming up ok, and the poets only need to go on and on to improve their skill.
