Dealing with premature pregnancy

It always break my heart whenever I come across an article about the increase of teenagers who are pregnant, and the number keeps increasing every year!

As a parent, this is not pleasant news especially when you have a girl child or even worse, when your child fell into such a situation. When you are a parent you want to see your child through school, and desire to see them performing well in their studies, and finally completing their studies to have a bright future.

Before I go any further, let me define Teenage Pregnancy. This is when a woman under 20 years gets pregnant.

It usually refers to teens between the age of 15 to 19, but it can include girls as young as 10. At this age, it is often referred to as adolescent pregnancy. What is most disheartening is that most of the time, theses minors are impregnated by older men or their peers who are unable to take care of them and the baby. This leaves parents of the girl to take responsibility in addition to difficult economic conditions.

Someone might be wondering why I decided to write about ‘Teenage Pregnancy’ at this time of the year, well, some children did not get a chance to write their end of year examinations because of pregnancy. Some even worse, they dropped out of school because they did not cope with the pregnancy.

The fact that in many of these cases, fathers of the unborn are usually unemployed, some are students and cannot take care of their babies, it can cause a lot of stress to the pregnant teen and might cause complications for the unborn baby. I have seen some students back then when I was a student at Junior/Senior schools breaking from school because they got pregnant. This can be very difficult because they were forced by circumstances to take responsibility for their actions and some end up falling in child labor because they want to raise money for their unborn babies. Some even after such difficult circumstances, bonce back to complete their studies and make meaningful contributions to the country’s economy.

To Parents and Guardian, I know this is a very difficult path but try to be calm, give them as much support as you can. While it is not easy for both of you, the damage has already been done.
