EARLY SEXUAL DEBUT

-

Engaging in sexual activity at a young age can have serious consequences for adolescent females, particularly when it comes to their risk of developing cervical cancer. Research has shown that those who start having sex earlier in life are more likely to develop this disease than those who delay their sexual debut. This is due in part to the fact that the cervix is not fully developed during adolescence, making it more susceptible to potential cancerous growths as a result of sexual intercourse.

In our current society, there is a trend that is gaining popularity among girls from as far as 12 years. This is evident by high numbers of teenage pregnancies as per Ministry of health, recording 1489 children under the age of 15 years in the year 2023. This trend is driven by the desire to avoid legal issues related to defilement, not aware its a potential health hazard. However, many of these girls manage to keep their activities hidden from their guardians, and as a result, they are exposing themselves to the risk of cervical cancer.

Several factors contribute to this phenomenon. For instance, parents working long hours and lack of parental supervision make it easy for these girls to engage in risky behavior. Additionally, early physical maturity, permissive attitudes toward sex, alcohol and substance use contribute significantly to this trend. Unfortunately, perpetrators take advantage of these factors.

It’s crucial not to blame anyone for this situation but rather urge all guardians to fulfill their roles in child rearing. Supporting our children’s endeavors is essential in addressing this issue. Unlike in the past where parents had limited interaction especially with issues relating to sex and sexuality with their kids, today’s generation requires close parental involvement for better guidance and informed decision-making.

Despite busy work schedules, parents and guardians should make an effort to create sufficient family bonding time. This will help them identify any changes in behavior or habits that may indicate risky behavior and encourage open communication with their children on such matters. By doing so, we can ensure that our children are safe from harm while still allowing them the freedom they need to grow into responsible adults who can make informed decisions about their lives.

Early sexual debut among girls is linked to an increased risk of cervical cancer, and various factors contribute to this trend, it’s crucial for young women to understand the risks associated with early sexual activity and take steps to protect their health and well-being. By staying informed and taking proactive measures, they can reduce their risk of developing cervical cancer and enjoy healthier, happier lives.
