Search for missing children continues

- BY LAME LUCAS

Police in Mogoditshane are appealing to members of the public to assist in finding two missing siblings - a girl and boy - aged 14 and 12.

The two children who reside in Nkoyaphiri ward and attend Nkoyaphiri Primary School, went missing last week Thursday evening, according to Mogoditshane Police Station Commander, Boemo Bok.

He said they are still searching for the kids but nothing positive is coming out. Bok said missing persons’ cases in Mogoditshane are worrisome but in most cases, the persons usually reappear after three to four days after the search. Councillor for Nkoyaphiri Central, Bakang Matlhoo said when he received a phone call this past Saturday that two children went missing in his area, he immediately took a public address system and went around to announce that the public should assist in finding the children. Matlhoo also posted on all social media platforms so that whoever finds a lead in the case could assist. “As the leadership for Nkoyaphiri we met together with members of the public and grouped all Ipelegeng workers for them to assist in finding the children. We have groups in clusters and each group has a police officer so that they advise accordingly and assist also in any violence that could occur during the search,” Matlhoo said. Matlhoo said though they had not found any leads by Tuesday, they were hoping that they would find the children. He highlighted that such incidents hardly occur in their area as the last incident was five years ago when a young girl went missing only to be found in South Africa alive. So far the search for the children has covered Diremogolo, Mogodisthane Senior, Mmopane, as well as Mogoditshane BDF Camp. Posters will be placed all over the area to sensitise people about the search.

A member of one of the clusters in the search, Goitsemodimo Orapeleng indicated that the children are from Serowe and only relocated to stay with their father last year June.

Talk in Nkoyaphiri is rife that on the day the two went missing, it appears that shortly after they arrived home from school, the younger sibling was sent to buy meat, and the older one followed and they were never seen again. It is also alleged that the two children were not happy staying with their father and stepmother, and wanted to go back to their biological mother in Serowe. Meanwhile, Chairperson of Nkoyaphiri Village Development Committee, Kgomotso Mocha said the search will continue until the children are found.
