INVEST IN WOMEN FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT - BSE CHAIR
Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) Chairperson, Neo Mooki said investing in women is a significant factor to economic growth and a prosperous society. Speaking during BSE opening bell ceremony on Friday, Mooki said BSE recognizes that promoting gender equality is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic imperative for sustainable development and economic growth. “It is heartening to note that the BSE stands in solidarity with other stock exchanges around the world in recognizing International Women’s Day, reaffirming our commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable society.”
She revealed that BSE workforce constitutes 61 percent of women and 50 percent of all staff at management level are women. “We firmly believe that diversity is our strength, and by harnessing the talents and perspectives of women, we can drive innovation, foster creativity, and achieve greater success as an organization.” Mooki further stated that promoting gender equality requires collective action and collaboration across various sectors and stakeholders. “Together, we can leverage our collective resources, expertise, and influence to drive meaningful change and create a more inclusive and equitable world for all.”
In her remarks, Botswana National Gender Commission Chairperson, Joy Phumaphi said the theme for this year’s international women’s day, ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’ highlighted the critical importance of directing resources, support and opportunities towards women to drive socio-economic development
and foster inclusive growth. She said while government is committed to creating an environment where women can thrive and contribute to the nation’s progress, challenges persist, and there is still much work to be done. “Gender disparities continue to exist in various sectors, including employment, education, and political representation.
Women and girls continue to face discrimination, violence, and marginalization, hindering their ability to fully participate and benefit from the fruits of development.”Phumaphi said addressing these challenges requires sustained commitment, collaboration, and investment from all stakeholders.
