Sunday Soccer Teams Plough Back

- Lebogang Mosikare Staff Writer

Some sections of society have stayed away from Sunday non-league soccer games, as they view the social play as a breeding ground for and associate it with misconduct, excessive alcohol drinking and illicit drug use.

They are of the view that there is nothing positive about Sunday football games.

Although there is some semblance of truth in such views, some Sunday soccer teams are contributing positively in scommunities.

A case in point that not all Sunday soccer teams are a nuisance to society, 10 such teams as a display for common cause in using the school’s football ground as their venue and ploughing back into the school donated a bar fridge, defy freezer and water-cooling dispenser to Phatsimo Primary School.

To indicate that schools matter to the teams, who are also employees from Scania, Kgalagadi Breweries Limited (KBL), Botswana Breweries Limited, Coca Cola, Botswana Power Corporation (Matshelagabedi), Bakhwinya Social Club, Mmadinare Social Club, Kutlwano Police Station and Tatitown Police Station donated the abovementioned goods to the primary school on Friday.

The donations were solely raised from fundraising activities and the individual pockets of the players, not their employers.

According to Mogorosi Molojwane, the teams found it fit to give back in appreciation to the school for allowing the teams to use the school’s football pitch and fund programmes that enhance the well-being of the school.

Molojwane, who is an employee at KBL and acted as the spokesperson for the teams during the handing over ceremony said: “Each team donated P250. We then organised a football tournament in the school and we managed to raise P7,500. We then donated P2,500 to Botswana Society for the Deaf in Francistown who have also allowed us to use their soccer ground on Sundays. The society used the money to buy groceries”.

Explaining the rationale behind buying Phatsimo the goods, Molojwane said after having consultations with the management of the school, they discovered that the headmaster of the school did not have a place to store water and refreshments for guests.

“We bought the water dispenser so that parents and other people who come to the school’s staff room for various errands can use it whenever they visit. We also bought the deep freezer to enable the school to put anything sellable inside it to raise funds,” Molojwane said.

In his welcome remarks, the deputy headmaster of Phatsimo, Abraham Moradu thanked the teams for helping during their hour of need.

“Blessed is the hand that giveth. We are very happy to have this symbiotic relationship with the teams and we hope that our relationship will grow stronger,” Moradu said.

The area councillor for Block 3, Mmoloki Gaebotswe shares Moradu’s sentiments and expressed his gratitude as well.
