GALAXY, ORAPA GET

FAVOURABLE DRAW ON CAF RETURN

- Kabelo Boranabi Correspondent

League champions Jwaneng Galaxy and Orapa United have a fair draw in their CAF inter club competitions. The two sides will be playing the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup respectively for the second consecutive season.

In a draw held in Cairo, Egypt, Galaxy were drawn against DFC Beme Arrondissement of Central African Republic (CAR) in the preliminary round of the Champions League. Galaxy will be making their second appearance in the Champions League. In the previous season, the Galaxy Stars were knocked out of the competition in the first round by Mamelodi Sundowns.

They were beaten 5-1 on aggregate. On their second attempt, Galaxy will be facing a rather unfamiliar opponent in DFC Beme Arrondissement. CAR champions are making their maiden appearance in the competition and pose as a weaker opponent for Galaxy.

On their return to the Confederations Cup, the Ostriches are fixtured against a sizeable opponent in As Mangasport of Gabon. On three occasions, the Ostriches have not got beyond the preliminary round. Their opponents, Mangasport have also played five times in the Champions League but only made it into the first round of the competition twice.

The team’s first and only appearance in Confederation Cup was in 2012 and were knocked out in the preliminary round.

They are making a return to continental club football after nine years. Galaxy and Orapa will face their opponents on the weekend of September, 10-12 2021 with the Galaxy Stars playing home whilst the Ostriches will be away. The return legs will be played on the weekend of September 17-19.
