BPC’S MADUO 26

CORPORATE STRATEGY LAUNCHED

-

Botswana Power Corporation launched their new five year corporate strategy, ‘Maduo26’, at the Majestic Five hotel in Palapye to replace the preciding Masa 2020 strategy.

The ambitious five-year strategy, which has been operational since last year March, is expected to drive the corporation to achieve its vision of being “a regional benchmark in electricity supply” by 2026.

The previous strategy, Masa 2020, sought to turn the corporation into a profitable and efficient entity by 2020 through Financial Turnaround, Service delivery, SHERQ culture, and Organisational Efficiency among others. Palapye Council Chairperson, Honourable Khumoyame Lekoko who welcomed guests to the launch event said it was a ‘bang and burning fire of commitment’. Lekoko praised the strategy saying it gives stakeholders confidence that there is visionary stewardship of the Corporation. “Palapye is the heart of BPC, where its major process of generating electricity starts. It is one of our biggest business partners, employer and it brings a lot of economic activity for our community,” she stated.

Unpacking the strategy for the stakeholders, the corporation’s Board Chairman, Professor Oboetswe Motsamai, said it relied on attaining financial sustainability, improving asset management and employee experience as well as establishing project execution capabilities. Other priorities include improving operational excellence, achieving zero harm, improving corporate image and increasing generation capacity.

As the strategy’s overseer, the Board monitors the execution of the strategic plan by Management through existing governance structures and the chairman promised to call

for updates every quarter in a bid to make a difference.

The energy industry regulations have evolved leading BPC to rethink and adapt its business approach. “Similarly, the Board, Management and staff of the Corporation are called upon to undergo a mindset change to enable us to collectively meet the demands and challenges of operating in this new era wherein energy generation has been proliferated,” Motsamai said.

The professor acknowledged that Masa2020 was not successfully but was optimistic Maduo26 can transform the Corporation because it is well crafted to ensure highest level performance by focusing on the strategic priorities. “Our greatest resources as the Corporation are the men and women employed by the organization,” he further stated. BPC chief Executive Officer, David

Kgoboko said following crucial lessons derived from review of the previous strategy, they are better placed for the four years of becoming a ‘regional benchmark in electricity supply’ and ‘powering the economy with pride by supplying reliable, safe, competitive and sustainable electricity’.

To achieve this Kgoboko stated that a high performance culture of predictive maintenance, effective execution of projects and digitalization of processes is necessary. To this end, BPC has identified five core values to create the right environment for execution of the strategy. Zero Harm, Ethical Conduct, Passion for Excellence, People First and Team Player represent the attitudes, behaviours and characters that will be portrayed by all BPC staff according to the organisation’s chief.

BPC has established a projects department to develop project execution capabilities and drive effective implementation of the project. In the digital space, Kgoboko said they had commissioned HR self service platforms to improve talent management and speed leave applications, overtime claims and recruitment processes.

“The corporation has adopted simplistic and easy to understand tools for translating the strategy into actionable items. The strategy has been cascaded to various departments and sections to ensure alignment and goal congruence,” he further stated.

BPC Workers Union Chairman Patrick Siamang pledged the support of the union for the project. “We promise the board we will journey together.

We will roll up our sleeves,” he stated. Apparently the union was involved in the formulation process and they reached a mutual understanding which will involve the union in the running of the organization.

Palapye Member of Parliament, Onneetse Mogapi was grateful his constituency, which is the source of Botswana power was allowed to host the event.

He praised the corporation for appointing a citizen CEO and called for relocation of BPC head office to the source.

Furthermore, Mogapi urged BPC to apply for government subsidies to cushion those who need connection in new areas Palapye. “I will support you with all my heart and ensure you are allocated a budget,” he said.

After the CEO officially launched amidst strategy theme song, the stakeholders lined up to paste their signed Pledge Cards. The pledge is as follows; “I pledge that I will be a team player in implementation of the new Maduo 26 Corporate Strategy. I shall live the Values of the corporation and drive the organization towards high performance,”
