Another first as Orange launches 5G

- Larona Makhaiza Correspondent

Orange Botswana launched 5G technology, becoming the first cellular network company in the country to do so.

The 5G network will only be available in Greater Gaborone and Francistown radiuses while other African cities are set to adopt the 5G network in 2023.

This marked the continuation of Orange launching new networks from the time when it launched the 3G, 4G and now the 5G network.

Speaking at the launch, Orange Middle East and Africa CEO Jérôme Hénique said the launch of the 5G network in Botswana will allow them to scale up the technology to other countries across Africa.

He said it would help promote Africa’s digital inclusion, resulting in socioeconomic growth and job creation.

“It is also ensuring Africa’s skills development on digital management tools and is in line with ambitions of the African Union Digital Transformation for Africa 2022– 2030. It begins here and now in Botswana,” he said.

Commenting on the development, President Mokgweetsi Masisi said the era of 5G technology is upon us, the opening of avenues to the acquisition of digital literacy by the many in society is, therefore, an imperative so that we can navigate the use of this technology beneficially.

“The 5G technology offers immense opportunities for businesses, citizens and the government. It accords data by sensors which will translate into businesses that will develop applications and services from these. This internet of things enhanced by 5G will facilitate the transformation of agricultural services, healthcare, and other essential services that will directly benefit citizens of Botswana,” Masisi said.

Orange Botswana has already partnered with several stakeholders to already use 5G to their advantage and make innovations.

This includes a partnership with MRI Botswana to develop a connected ambulance, whereby this connected ambulance will help paramedics to keep in touch with doctors so that they (doctors) can guide paramedics on what to do to save the patient’s life on their way to the hospital.
