FRANCISTOWN: The police in Tutume are still searching for a quartet of armed carjackers who allegedly stole a Toyota GD6 belonging to one of Maitengwe village’s leaders and was later recovered along the Botswana-Zimbabwe borderline.

It is alleged that the four unknown robbers attacked 65-year-old Maitengwe North councillor Patrick Makhumalo on May 4 at Megwe ward and robbed him of his belongings including the Toyota GD6 car.

Tutume Police Station Commander, Superintendent Lesego Kgosiemang told The Monitor that they are still searching for the assailants who allegedly robbed the councillor at gunpoint at his home.

He said the quartet, still on the run, stole the Toyota GD6, a laptop, two smartphones and a television set whilst pointing a gun at the complainant.

According to the Tutume top cop, the suspects who are currently untraceable, have been on the run for over a week.

He stated that the quartet tied up the complainant before robbing him.

After robbing him, the armed robbers then took the complainant’s car keys and fled with the vehicle and other belongings.

He said the suspects drove off towards the Botswana-Zimbabwe border line situated a stone throw away from Maitengwe village in an attempt to cross the border using an ungazetted point of entry. Kgosiemang indicated that the matter was reported to the police and a search was intensified.

He stated that the police then followed the car’s tracks and found it veering towards the borderline.

Upon realising that they were being followed, the armed robbers abandoned the car and fled to the other side of the border. He pleaded with the community to assist with information which could be helpful to arrest the suspects.
