First Capital hosts successful cattle breeding, quality seminar

-

First Capital Bank in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) recently hosted a seminar on breeding cattle for economic growth and sustainability in Gaborone.

The seminar brought together agriculture experts, thought leaders, and industry professionals to share insights and best practices on sustainable livestock farming practices. The seminar was a resounding success with over 160 attendees gaining valuable knowledge and networking opportunities.

There was a diverse line-up of speakers at the seminar who included Dr Julieta Fernandez Madero from Argentina, Ernest Janovsky from South Africa, and Professor Othusitse R Madibela, the acting deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs and Research at BUAN.

They shared their experiences and expertise on breeding strategies for improving meat quality in cattle, the effect of global market trends on Botswana’s agricultural markets and other relevant topics. The seminar also included an interactive session providing attendees with the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning and also exchange ideas with their peers. During her opening speech, First Capital Bank CEO Reinette van der Merwe highlighted the critical role that agriculture plays in the economy of Botswana and the bank’s commitment to supporting the growth and development of the sector. She also acknowledged the success of the recently held Mmabothubela

Farmer’s Day, which First Capital Bank powered and underscored the importance of events like the seminar for driving innovation and improving the productivity and profitability of the livestock industry.

“‘The presence of experts from Argentina, South Africa, and Botswana highlighted the importance of this event, which allowed for the sharing of innovative breeding methods that could improve productivity in the sector,” said van der Merwe. “As a bank, we recognise the crucial role that agriculture plays in the country’s economy, and we are committed to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable development and economic growth,” she said.

During his address, the Assistant Minister of Agriculture Molebatsi Molebatsi said: “Transformation and liberalisation of the beef industry are key towards growth and global competitiveness of the agricultural sector. We have, therefore, noticed Parliament through a Bill for the Establishment of Meat Regulatory Authority (MIRA). This will allow full participation of all key value chain players in the running of the beef industry and bring about institutional and regulatory reforms in the livestock sector in the country.”

“I learned so much from this seminar,” said a young farmer attending the seminar.

“The speakers were knowledgeable and engaging, and they provided practical insights that I can apply in my work.” Following the great success of the seminar First Capital Bank looks forward to hosting similar events to continue driving innovation and promoting sustainable development in the agriculture sector.
