Guard your one life jealously!

In recent weeks, social media has been abuzz with reports of poisoning, tragically resulting in the loss of lives. At the forefront of these incidents are cases of people being poisoned at pubs, where substances are slipped into their drinks while they’re hitting the dance floor or taking a bathroom break.

The stark reality is that, as individuals, we bear the responsibility to safeguard ourselves and prioritise our safety. While we all have different preferences, it is crucial to recognise that, regardless of personal choices, we must take ownership of our safety.

There are disturbing reports of an increasing number of people seeking medical attention only to discover they were poisoned, with some of these cases ending in tragedy.

Most of these poisoning incidents seem to occur at entertainment venues, where drinks are allegedly spiked while individuals are engaged in activities like dancing or using the bathroom. The world has changed from the safer times enjoyed by our parents and grandparents. The Internet has also facilitated access to information, which aids those with malicious intentions.

Not long ago, a poignant incident circulated on social media, featuring a beautiful young woman with the caption ‘Rest in Peace’ (RIP). It was later revealed that she had succumbed to poisoning. Unconfirmed reports suggest she left her drink unattended and someone slipped poison in it. Unbeknownst to her, she consumed the drink only to fall sick shortly after. This unfortunate situation could have been prevented.

Instances of date rape, predominantly affecting women, have been reported. Conspirators spike drinks to render their targets uncontrollably intoxicated and vulnerable to assault. Despite efforts by the Botswana Police Service and other stakeholders to educate women about not leaving their drinks unattended, such incidents still persist.

For those who relish nightlife, especially the younger generation and future leaders, the onus is on oneself to exercise caution. Whether at a pub or any public place, it is imperative to be mindful of what one consumes. Keep your opened drink in your hand to ensure its safety. Whilst we often proclaim the role of security forces in protecting us, we too must guard our lives vigilantly. Every individual’s life matters and it is time to take responsibility.
