City Lights brings Come Duze vibes

- Larona Makhaiza Correspondent

The much anticipated City Lights festival has set its eyes on shaking up this festive season as the organisers promise to bring the event live on the national broadcaster, Botswana Television (Btv). The event is set to take place at the Royal Aria Stadium on December 31.

This move by City Lights organisers is one of its kind and has never been held in Botswana. The live broadcast of an event acts as an aid to those people that suffer from social anxiety and cannot be in crowded places but also at the same time yearn to attend such gigantic events. So City Lights will provide the opportunity for those kinds of people to witness the ushering of the New Year like they are at the venue.

It has since been proven by the neighbouring South Africa that events like these are possible with the famous Come Duze

event, which is always held every December 31st on SABC channels.

The organiser of City Lights,

Gilbert ‘PP Wa Pimp’ Seagile stated that the move to follow in the steps of Come Duze

is to make Gaborone come to life. He said normally around this time, Gaborone looks like a ghost town with people back to their villages. “People always complain about not having events in Gaborone especially on the last day of the year. But we want to change that as there are lots of events on Christmas across the country so why not have this event on New Year’s eve in Gaborone so that people can usher in the New Year,” he said.

‘PP Wa Pimp’ further stated that City Lights intends to also market the capital city and keep it relevant to many peoples’ lips. “When tourists come to Botswana, they end up at Places like Maun. Recently Will Smith was spotted in Maun but he did not spend time here in Gaborone, which is something we want to change,” PP said.

Additionally, he said they target to market Botswana to an international platform, as they are currently selling their tickets in South Africa where the tickets are selling like fat cakes. “In order to improve the ticket sales that are going really well at Rustenburg and Mafikeng, next week we would be hosting another launch of City Lights in Gauteng Province in SA,” he said.

The event is also set to cut itself above the rest as it booked more DJs than vocalists. Bookings include, Master KG, Black Motion, ATI, Scar, Latty, Fingers, DJ Fresh and many more. Hey Nyenaaah, Kagiso Ludo De Klerk, Phly Honey and Thabo will be the hosts.
