‘We keep making excuses for them’

aborone United (GU) coach, Pontsho ‘Piro’ Moloi was left utterly disappointed by the performance of his players whom he said, “just didn’t come to the pitch”. This follows their goalless draw with Masitaoka at the National Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Moya goleele, as GU is also known, had one of their flat performances this season in a game in which they were looking to bounce back to winning ways following their disappointing midweek defeat to cross town rivals, Township Rollers.

With the match played under the scorching heat, GU players were guilty of poor decision making throughout the match. Their strikers Thatayaone Kgamanyane and Molaodi Tlhalefang wasted one-on-one goal-scoring opportunities.

Following the match, GU coach Moloi was lost for words as he tried to explain his team’s lacklustre performance. Moloi said they keep making excuses for the players after a poor performance but on the day, it was inexcusable.

The disappointed Moloi said his players did not show up at all.

“Ehh, eish, I mean really what else was there today? I didn’t see any bit of my team. I can try and give all the excuses for their performance but at the end of the day, they are professionals and they know what is expected of them.

“I don’t know, they can’t say they were heavy-legged because they played midweek. The opponent also played midweek.

Like I’m saying, we try by all means to make excuses for them but there is nothing, they didn’t come to the pitch,” Moloi said. Furthermore, the GU gaffer bemoaned his team’s lack of options on the bench. However, he said they’re looking to bring new signings during the January transfer window. “Honestly, we are thin, we are very thin but January is around the corner, we will try to work on that,” he added.

On the contrary, Masitaoka coach Thaloba ‘Machine’ Nthaga was hugely impressed by his team’s performance who were unlucky to leave with just a point for their brave performance.

“It was a continuation of our game against Galaxy. I think second half we had chances on the break, we just had to be more clinical.

But I’m happy with the performance. We are a team that plays football and we showed that.

Second half they put us under pressure but we were dangerous on the break,” Nthaga said. From the first minute, Masitaoka looked the most dangerous and hit the upright in the fifth minute. However, GU would see a couple of chances go to waste when striker Tlhalefang failed to convert consecutive one-on-one situations in the 13th and 15th minute. The teams went to recess locked at 0-0.

Second half was just a continuation of the first half, with both teams’ strikers failing to find their composure inside the box. GU had most of the ball but Masitaoka looked dangerous on the break.

The match ended goalless, meaning GU have now dropped five points out of a possible six in a space of three days and are now six points behind table topping Rollers.
