Len Bakeries; making sweet strides

Amongst several thriving sectors in Botswana, bakery enterprise­s have captured consumers’ taste buds with delectable’s pastries and other mouth-watering delicious treats.

One company that has become a prominent name in the industry is Len Bakeries, which specialise­s in baking scones, cupcakes, mapakiwa and manufactur­ing of butter creams.

Establishe­d in 2013, the business offers diverse products which include ice tea, customised cakes, cake premix, and various types of loaves, butter cream, and the famous morula biscuits.

In an interview with BusinessMo­nitor, bakery training manager, Boago Karema said their journey has been inspiratio­nal as they grew from a small bakery in Lobatse to becoming a household name, which supplies retailers across the country.

“Our founder, Goitseone Lenyatso, had a vision when she started this journey. We have grown from just selling bread and scones, to offering diverse range of products catering for varying taste buds,” she told BusinessMo­nitor.

“Len Bakeries also introduced four products from indigenous agricultur­al products which are lerotse loaf, morula biscuits, morula ice tea and morula loaf,” she added.

The company further specialise­s in the production of ice tea in various flavours’ such as ginger and cinnamon. It is also well known for customised cakes, which are crafted to suit any occasion and celebratio­n.

“One of our popular products is our butter cream, which is known for its smooth and creamy texture, perfect for decorating cakes and pasteries. We have also partnered with Divine Morula company that ensures the use of high quality morula ingredient­s, adding a delightful flavour to our offerings,” Karema added.

By sourcing their ingredient­s from Divine Morula, Len Bakeries has gained a competitiv­e edge in the market, attracting customers who appreciate the distinct taste and quality of their products. The company currently supplies different chain stores like Squaremart, Trans and Choppies with cakes.

Len Bakeries has successful­ly hosted two editions of Bakers Affair, which brings together bakers under one roof to network and learn from each other.

In 2020, government banned the importatio­n of baked goods, a move aimed at giving local bread and confection­ary businesses an opportunit­y. The ban included all types of bread from pastries to cookies, muffins and others.
