Safe Pro launches P56m cold storage facility
The Safe Pro Cold Storage Facility in Tuli Block has been praised as a vital addition to Botswana’s logistical supply infrastructure for horticultural produce.
Speaking last week at the official launch of the facility, President Mokgweetsi Masisi said the multi-million pula storage solution signifies a crucial moment in government’s commitment to backing local farmers and reducing reliance on imported produce.
“This facility, valued at P56 million, represents a pivotal step in the development of Botswana’s agricultural sector. “It supports local farmers and fosters sustainable growth,” he noted.
During the launch, Saleem Malique, CEO of Safe Cold Storage Solutions, underscored the unique features and benefits of the facility.
“One of the hallmarks of this storage is its inclusive approach, allowing farmers to store their produce for an extended period or sell it directly to Safe Pro,” remarked Malique.
“This dual functionality ensures that farmers have the flexibility and support needed to optimise their yields sustainably, aligning with the government’s vision to enhance local agricultural production,” he added.
He stressed the importance of providing farmers access to modern storage facilities, stating that it “supports the government’s vision to restrict the import of produce”.
“By offering readily accessible storage solutions, the Safe Pro Cold Storage Facility will enable retailers across Botswana to access a consistent supply of locally grown fruits and vegetables, promoting food security and economic stability,” he observed.
Moreover, Malique highlighted the multifaceted capabilities of the facility, stating that it goes beyond mere storage.
“This storage capability extends beyond storage, presenting opportunities for value addition, an initiative that will enhance the quality of agricultural produce,” he added. He alluded that this value addition underscores Botswana’s commitment to promoting higher standards in agricultural output and increasing competitiveness in both local and international markets. Masisi commended the investors behind the initiative.
“I applaud the investors of this fresh produce facility for their dedication to leveraging the latest technologies and expertise from around the world,” stated the President.
He also highlighted the facility’s advanced monitoring capabilities, with developers overseeing operations remotely, ensuring optimal efficiency and
performance.
