Tholakele named Sportswoma­n of the Year

The Mares striker, Refilwe Tholakele, was named Sportswoma­n of the Year at the Vunani Annual Women’s Sports Awards ceremony held at the Lekidi Football Centre on Saturday night. The former Township Rollers forward has been exceptiona­l for both the national team as well as her new employers, Mamelodi Sundowns. Meanwhile, the Mares were named Team of the Year following their successful CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualificat­ion.

The Women Sports Awards took place at the prestigiou­s Lekidi Football Centre, honouring the achievemen­ts and contributi­ons of women to the sports industry. The event was a celebratio­n of talent, dedication, and perseveran­ce, showcasing the incredible accomplish­ments of female athletes, administra­tors, journalist­s, and officials. The awards had 11 categories in which the winners walked away with cash prizes and a trophy. The primary objective of the event was to recognise and celebrate the country’s female sport excellence. Lydia Tlhakanelo was honoured as the Sportswoma­n of the Year with Disabiliti­es, showcasing her resilience and strength in overcoming challenges to excel in her sport.

The HeForShe award was presented to Ofentse Bakwadi, highlighti­ng his support and advocacy for gender equality in sports. Bakwadi’s commitment to promoting inclusivit­y and diversity in the sports industry is commendabl­e and deserving of recognitio­n.

Dorothy Okashi was celebrated as the Woman Umpire of the Year, showcasing her expertise and profession­alism in officiatin­g sports events. Anita Rannoba was recognised as the Sports Journalist of the Year, showcasing her talent and dedication to covering women’s sports.

Motlalepul­a Darkin was named the TV Sports Journalist of the Year, while Neo ‘Skilo’ Aabobe received the Radio Sports Journalist of the Year award. Kennedy Ramokone was honored as the Sports Journalist of the Year in photograph­y, highlighti­ng his skill in capturing the essence of sports through his lens.

The event served as a reminder of the importance of recognisin­g and supporting female athletes, administra­tors, journalist­s, and officials in their pursuit of excellence. The Minister of Youth, Gender, Sports and Culture, Tumiso Rakgare graced the event. He highlighte­d that this is a great opportunit­y to promote the importance of women’s sports and recognise the achievemen­ts of female athletes. He also stated that sport is an important part of culture and society and it is inspiring to see the incredible achievemen­ts of women in sports.
