Amother, aged 34, and her 10-month-old daughter died early Saturday morning after they were struck by a moving truck popularly referred to as matshelonyana. The deceased’s were hit by the truck in Pilane while crossing at the traffic lights on the A1 Highway. Confirming investigation into the incident, Mochudi Police Station commander, Superintendent Joel Masilo said the fatal accident occurred after midnight when the mother from Boseja ward, who was carrying her daughter, attempted to cross the road. He said the truck was driven by a 62-yearold man whose breath was tested and was found that his alcohol level was beyond the limit. “The mother was from the side of the mall, crossing the road facing west. We do not know where she was coming from that late, but investigations into the matter are ongoing to establish all that,” Masilo said. “The child died on the spot and was certified dead on arrival at Deborah Retief Memorial Hospital (DRM) whilst her mother was referred to Princess Marina Referral Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.” Meanwhile, he said they are investigating yet another fatal accident in which a Zimbabwean man, whose age is not yet known, was hit and killed by a car near Malotwane turn off along the A1 the same night. “The deceased was hit by a 52-year-old man who was driving a Toyota cargo van. He was driving from the north to the south. The deceased was rushed to DRM where he was certified dead on arrival by the doctors. “Investigations into the matter are ongoing, but the driver was tested and was sober,” Masilo added.
