Bayeyi advocate for ethnic equality
Kgosi Jacob Seedisa of the Bayeyi tribe has underscored the enduring struggle of his people for fair treatment and recognition within Botswana. Addressing the Wayeyi Cultural Festival held in Gumare recently, he highlighted the historical injustices faced by the Wayeyi community, emphasising their ongoing battle to be acknowledged as integral members of the nation.
“Over time, our forefathers endured unjust treatment by the government without cause,” Seedisa said. “Despite our efforts through legal avenues, we continue to face marginalisation and exclusion. It is a daily struggle to be seen as equals in our own country.”
Echoing Seedisa’s sentiments, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ngami, Caterpillar Hikuama, emphasised the need for the Wayeyi people to be accorded the same respect and opportunities as other ethnic groups in Botswana.
“While it is true that Wayeyi possess Botswana national identity cards and access to essential services such as education and healthcare, true equality goes beyond mere documentation,” the MP said.
“Our cultural leaders deserve recognition and inclusion in institutions like Ntlo ya Dikgosi to ensure our voices are heard and respected,” he added. Responding to these calls for action, President Mokgweetsi Masisi reaffirmed government’s commitment to addressing the grievances of the Wayeyi community and promoting cultural diversity across Botswana.
“My administration is dedicated to uplifting every culture within our borders, and we will take concrete steps to address the challenges faced by the Wayeyi people, however, it is important for the Wayeyi to embrace their identity as Batswana and actively contribute to the enrichment of our national heritage,” the President said.
Masisi further stressed the importance of a collective mindset shift towards cultural appreciation and development, saying it is a crucial step towards fostering unity and inclusivity in Botswana.
“By embracing and celebrating our diverse cultures, we cultivate a sense of belonging and self-discipline amongst our citizens.
“Together, we can forge a future where every individual feels valued and respected for their unique heritage,” he added.
