Suspended MP doesn’t rule out BDP exit

- BY DANIEL CHIDA

Suspended Member of Parliament for Francistown West, Ignatius Moswaane, says he will table a motion of constitutional review in the coming July Parliament.

In an exclusive interview with The Voice, Moswaane said that the motion was supposed to have been tabled by another suspended MP for Nata/gweta, Polson Majaha, but President Mokgweetsi Masisi asked him not to since it will come at a later stage. Moswaane said that if Masisi does not bring the motion to the house then he will table it himself. “It is time we amend our constitution because the current one is too old, we need to have 100 MPS and 30 Ministers elected by the President outside parliament.”

He said that the current situation sees some MPS not performing to the expected standard because they want to be selected for cabinet positions. “Some people think that by voicing out my concerns, I want to be made Minister while some say I won’t be made a Minister because of the way I speak. I want to make it clear that I didn’t come to parliament to be a Minister but to represent people and, by that, I will never be a bootlicker or shy away from advocating for the truth.”

Moswaane was suspended by his party, Botswana Democratic Party, for among other issues “behaving in a grossly disorderly and unruly manner that might bring the party name into disrepute, behaving in a manner calculated to bring the party name into disrepute and using parliamentary or council positions and privileges to attack the party and/or its government.”

The 60 days suspension comes amid allegations that the MP intended to defect to Botswana Patriotic Front.

When quizzed about the allegations, Moswaane did not rule out the possibility, noting that he has a choice to join any political party, should he get expelled.
