LESSONS IN STYLING

- Styled by Khoi With Khoi-fro

Istarted styling before I even knew what styling was. A Fashion Stylist is a consultant who selects the clothing for editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, concert performances, and any public appearances made by celebrities, models or other public figures. Stylists have become increasingly influential in shaping fashion imagery and life in general yet little is known about the profession, its diverse incarnations and its aesthetic economy. A stylist is the best treasure hunter ever. We hunt for what the world will be like in the next years, make clothes that will be for the seasons to come and get people to love being in them.

I came across a childhood friend and they recalled, “Tsholo, do you remember that day you took me to the toilets, gave me a nice dress and helped me wear it on civvies day? This is your gift.” I was left pleasantly surprised that this had been my interest for a long time. Making people look and feel good through fashion has always been the reason I love the industry of fashion and styling. Throughout the years styling esteemed celebrities, public figures and major campaigns in and beyond Botswana, there are style lessons that have taken me and my clients to reputable style lists. Today, I want to share those style tips and lessons in fashion.

HOW I DRESS MYSELF OR CLIENTS: I always go for self-expression instead of impressing an audience

HOW I SHOP:

HOW I RE-INVENT: I trend-forecast, that is researching what’s in and what’s out, from reputable organisations like the British Colour Council and CFDA (The Council of Fashion Designers of America) for colours, textures and the world of textiles predictions. Most times, I use my innate ability to create styles that come alive

WHERE I GET CLOTHES: I believe in supporting SMMES, as well as up and coming designers because they have that raw and authentic style DNA. I also love fashion thrifting for unique pieces

HOW TO DECIDE WHAT YOU NEED: Re-organising my wardrobe helps me keep track of what I need to discard and what I need to buy. All this, I take into consideration of the longevity of a fashion piece. I don’t keep trends
