ELEPHANTS TRAMPLE FISHERMAN

- BY CHRISTINAH MOTLHABANE

A fishing expedition ended in tragedy for a 60-year-old Semotswane man trampled to death by elephants on his return home last Thursday.

Along with three other men, Baozi Ruka Onious embarked on an illegal three-day fishing trip at Dikgathong Dam.

According to Tonota Station Commander, Oteng Ngada, as they made their way home, the men came into problems when their car got stuck along the sandy road.

“The passengers all got out reducing the weight in the vehicle and allowing it to continue,” explained the top cop.

Sadly, once the car had driven free of the sand, before the men could catch up with it, they crossed paths with a herd of elephants.

“The other man managed to run away and they attacked the now deceased. They eventually arrived home and told others what had happened and they went on searching the following day without informing the police. They found that the elephants trampled Onious and he was dead. They brought his body to the police station and we engaged the wildlife department who are helping with the investigations,” stated Ngada, adding the killer jumbos are yet to be identified.

“People must always be cautious when walking in bushy areas,” he urged.

Meanwhile, Ngada revealed his station enjoyed a relatively peaceful holidays.

“We arrested eight people for selling traditional beer, three for drinking in the street and 16 for unlawful gatherings,’ disclosed the police boss.

Ngada’s officers also busted a Zimbabwean man at Mandunyane who was caught with 270 bottles of 200ml King Stallion brandy.
