ANOTHER ELEPHANT ATTACKS

Tramples traditional doctor to death

- BY CATHERINE MOEMEDI

Two weeks ago, the death of a young man under the heavy weight of an elephant in Gumare Village became the talk of social media as a live video of the attack went viral.

Last week Wednesday, an 80-year-old traditional doctor was killed by another elephant inside the buffalo fence at Boro while foraging for medicinal herbs.

According to Maun Police Station Commander, Chenamo Orateng, the old man was in the company of his 33-year-old grandson when he met his demise.

“On the morning of the 25th, we received a report from a man explaining that while looking for traditional herbs inside the buffalo fence, he and his grandfather got attacked by an elephant. He further told us that he managed to escape but the oldman was trampled on and killed,” explained Orateng.

“We went to the scene and found the oldman lying lifeless and we took him to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital where he was certified dead upon arrival,” Orateng said.

Although this incident is the second elephant attack in his jurisdiction this year, Orateng has expressed concern over the seemingly rising human-wildlife conflict related incidents.

“Human-wildlife conflict is a serious concern; people continue to lose their lives to wild animals but we seem to forget how dangerous these animals can be” highlighted Orateng.

Orateng further expressed serious concern over people who risk their lives by going into the buffalo fence, which is infested by deadly wildlife.

“The buffalo fence has been put there as a means of curbing wildlife conflict, it acts as a boundary between humans and wildlife and people should avoid overstepping their boundaries by going into the fence because they can get killed by these animals,” advised Orateng.
