Zim donate Covid vaccines to Namibia
With Zimbabwe seemingly taking the lead in the region in terms of Covid -19 vaccinations, our government has decided to go a step further and donate some doses to Namibia.
For whatever reason, some of our neighbouring countries have been struggling to access the vaccines while for us it has not been that difficult.
This week, President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced on social media that the government had donated 20,000 doses to Namibia.
“Only when all citizens of our region are protected will Zimbabwe be able to return to normalcy… let’s protect all Africans,” he tweeted.
A kind gesture, I must say, but I couldn’t help but wonder why he chose to donate to Namibia and not Botswana, Zambia or Mozambique.
The ever-sceptical journalist in me was quick to conclude that Botswana and Zambia couldn’t be beneficiaries because they denied my President a chance ‘to shine’ at the official opening of the Kazungula Bridge earlier this year.
Remember how for days people made fun of President Mnangagwa because he did not cut the ribbon and was treated like any other average VIP at the ceremony, so we are still sulking over that incident hence no donations for you, Batswana.
On a serious note, though, it sure feels good to be a donor for once and to be that success story. There is so much negativity about Zim and such stories give a glimmer of hope at a brighter future.
On a different note, Zimbabwe seems to be in election mode already, despite the elections being almost two years away.
Social media is awash with election talk, so much so that one might reasonably think we were going to the polls in weeks.
The sad reality, though, is that there is a very high chance of the status quo remaining the same. We have had numerous ‘so near yet so far’ moments when it comes to election results here in Zimbabwe and I doubt 2023 will be any different.
And, in other news, I literally laughed out loud as I read a court story involving a former Zanu PF big fish, Ignatius Chombo. A warrant of arrest was issued against him on Monday after he failed to appear in court.
Chombo, who is a also a former cabinet minister, is jointly charged with two other former Zanu PF officials on allegations of wearing regalia emblazoned with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s initials although they had been expelled from the party.
The trio posted pictures of themselves wearing the regalia on social media and, according to the state, the Zanu PF leadership saw this is as a nuisance.
I guess Chombo, who was a close ally of the late former President, Robert Mugabe, also views this charge as an irritant hence he did not even bother to turn up for court.
How can a whole ruling party be bothered by its former members wearing their regalia, they truly must stop being petty and focus on issues that matter!
