CHOPPIES REWARDS OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC ATHLETES
Last week Choppies Botswana lived up to their promise by rewarding athletes who performed exceptionally well during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and Paralympics.
Having initially pledged P250 000 for the relay team, Choppies increased the amount to P300 000.00 in order to allow each team member to walk away with P50 000.00 each. The relay team comprising of Leungo Scotch, Bayapo Ndori, Anthony Pesela, Baboloki Thebe, Zibane Ngozi and Isaac Makwala brought a bronze medal from the men’s 4x400m relays which was Botswana’s only medal from the competition. For qualifying for the men’s 400m and 800m finals, Makwala and Nijel Amos walked away with P25 000.00 each respectively. Paralympian Edwin Masuge also walked away with P25 000.00 for reaching the men’s 400m T-13 finals. Speaking at the handover of the incentives, Choppies Marketing Manager Katlego Gaborone praised the athletes for their exceptional performance from the games despite the Covid-19 scourge that affected their preparations. “You have proved beyond doubt that there is great talent in Botswana. You have shown your competitiveness and great sportsmanship in Tokyo this year. To our relay team, we thank you for raising the Botswana flag high and coming back with the coveted medals,” said Gaborone. Choppies have come a long way supporting sport development having supported Thebe in his journey towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification. Gaborone further paid tribute to sports bodies that made it possible for athletes to compete and excel at the Tokyo events. “The Olympics are a true demonstration of determination, great sacrifice and systematic effort, and therefore I would like to take time to recognize the different institutions that made our participation in the Olympics possible. To the Botswana Paralympics Association, Botswana Athletics Association, Botswana National Sports Commission and Botswana National Olympic Committee, your support of our athletes is the very reason why we are here and for that we are grateful,” she said.
