- BY TSHEPO KEHIMILE

After a series of frustrating postponements due to Covid-19 restrictions, local pugilists - Onkarabile ‘Scara’ Mothibedi of Top 10 Stable and the challenger, Moabi ‘The Eagle’ Ngaka of Drad Boxing Club - are set to tussle for the World Boxing Federation (WBF) African Bantamweight title on the 29th of October, 2021 at GICC.

November 2020 was a historic month for Scara, who is the current holder of the WBF African Bantamweight title as he became the first Motswana boxer to win an international title when he defeated a local lad, Tshepang ‘Gearbox’ Babui, through a unanimous decision.

Speaking at a media briefing held in Gaborone on Tuesday, Thuso Khubamang of Scud Missile Promotions said they are excited that the historic bout will finally be taking place after huge setbacks due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“We are happy about these latest developments with regards to these upcoming bouts. We (Scud Missile Promotions) have years developing and supporting local professional boxers and we are now bringing these bouts.

Moreover, in our efforts to develop African professional boxing, we have included women bouts which will line-up two South Africans - Thema Zuma and Simangele Hadebe - while other supporting bouts will be Kabelo Bagwasi, who will be facing Daniel Hlahane just to mention a few,” said Khubamang.

In his address, the 28-year-old Mothibedi thanked everyone who had been supporting him and vowed to defend his title to his level best. “I would like to thank God, my coach, manager and all the sponsors for this particular race and I would like to promise Moabi (Ngaka) that I will not easily lose hence he must expect a tough outing from my side,” he said.

On the other hand, the 24-year-old Ngaka said he acknowledged the fact that Scara has accepted his challenge for the belt and he must be ready as he is coming for him.

“I would like to thank Scara for giving me the opportunity to contest with him for this title and I want to caution him that he must be ready as I am going to give him a run for his money,” he said.
