SOCIAL MEDIA ROUND UP

- BY TUMISANG DALE RANKOPO

THIS past week was chockablock with all sorts of entertaining topics for discussion.

Everything from shocking A-list celebrity slaps to Facebook rants. Here are some of the highlights on this week’s Social Media Round-up.

THABO KEDIKILWE VS CHARMA GAL THIS past week saw the much-anticipated Makhadzi One Woman Show finally happen. And while this show could have its own round up, there are a few moments that caught social media’s attention.

One being the video Charma Gal posted of celebrity lawyer, Thabo Kedikilwe, chatting her up. The video raised eyebrows particularly because Kedikilwe claimed he discussed her cases with Uyapo (supposedly Ndadi). Kedikilwe works for Ndadi’s law firm and the firm was quick to put out a statement to apologise to Charma Gal. Kedikilwe went on a furious Facebook rant saying Charma Gal is the worst celebrity and has a disgusting attitude. “Charma deleted the video, too late screenshots are already flying around. A mess,” said one comment. “What prompted Charma to record that,” questioned one commenter. To which someone replied, “That’s a woman being harassed and threatened by a man, guys, since when do we blame victims for protecting themselves?”

I wonder what happens to young Kedikilwe after this. Will bygones be bygones or will this hurt his career?

WILL SMITH SMACKS THE S*** OUT OF CHRIS ROCK

International superstars, Will Smith and Chris Rock, were centre stage for one of the most iconic moments in television history.

The Academy Awards or the Oscars, as they are affectionately known, were secondary to the moment that sent shock waves across the world (and Chris’s face). Chris Rock was cracking a few jokes while presenting an award with one jab aimed at Jada Pinkett-smith, Will Smith’s wife.

Rock made a reference to Jada’s bald head knowing she has a struggle with alopecia. This was what prompted Will Smith to get up on stage and slap Rock across the face with the actor yelling out “KEEP MY WIFE’S NAME OUT YOUR F*** MOUTH!” Everyone’s jaws dropped. “The typical Motswana urge to yell “Wa mo tlogela?” would’ve been so strong if I were in that audience,” said one comment. One humourous comment said, “If Will Smith hadn’t slapped Chris Rock, I wouldn’t have known the Oscars even happened.” While someone else said, “If Chris Rock just said, “If that’s how mad he gets in March, imagine how pissed he is in August”. He probably could have won that round.” Will later won an award for best actor for his movie, King Richard.

It’s a shame his golden moment was stained by him losing his cool.

FUEL INCREASE Life is getting increasingly more expensive and it seems it won’t get any better anytime soon.

Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) announced this week an increase in petrol, diesel and paraffin ranging from P1.25 to P1.74. This is the first price increase this year, which followed four previous price increases last year. Batswana are not pleased. “Poverty is poverty and we shouldn’t be waiting to see “Zim levels” for us to believe that our people are struggling,” said one comment. “What’s the use of the National Petroleum Fund lately? Does it still exist?” questioned one commenter. “The funny part is prices of almost every commodity is going up everyday and an increase in fuel prices will make the situation go from bad to worse. While on the other hand our salaries stay the same,” said one comment.

“P13.66 a litre of petrol is crazy. Petrol increasing by nearly 74% in a year and a half is mad. Worst part is there will likely also be an electricity tariff increase in a few and no salary raise to match these increases?”

Tough times ahead for us all.
