UNLAWFUL WOUNDING

Man found guilty of stabbing girlfriend’s mother

- BY CATHERINE MOEMEDI

A 45-year-old Maun man has been convicted for allegedly wounding his girlfriend’s mother with a sharp object on the shoulder and left arm.

Initially charged with two counts of unlawful wounding for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend, Enamile Olebogeng, and her mother, Maikgantsho Olebogeng, the prosecution were forced to drop the other charge after the accused man’s girlfriend blatantly refused to testify against him indicating that they have reconciled and that she had forgiven him.

However, unwilling to take her daughter’s ‘forgive and forget’ route, Maikgantsho was determined to see her case through.

According to Chief Magistrate, Thebeetsile Mulalo, although the accused, one Dotora, claimed that he could have been mistaken for someone else, there is no question in his identity as both victims knew him very well.

“There is no question or issues of mistaken identity because the victim knew you very well since you were in a relationship with her daughter,” said Mulalo.

Mulalo further dismissed Dotora’ s claims of an alibi as an afterthought aimed at derailing the court.

“You said in your evidence in chief that during the night of the alleged attack you were in Gantsi assisting with political campaigns, however, you never put it to the prosecution when the matter was being investigated. I find that this is just an afterthought aimed at derailing this court,” said Mulalo.

The background of the case is that on May 9th, at around 2200hrs at Disaneng ward in Maun, Dotora attacked Olebogeng at her house, stabbing her on the arm and shoulder with a sharp object. It is further alleged that when Olebogeng’s mother, Maikgantsho Olebogeng, heard her daughter screaming for help, she rushed to the house to see what was going on only for her to suffer the same fate as her daughter.

After stabbing them, Dotora fled the scene and the matter was reported to the police while the victims were taken to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital for medical examination.

Dotora, who was on bail all along, has been remanded in custody pending his sentence.
