- Photography | Sade Akinosho

“Happy new year, fashion icon! I follow your column religiously and love it! I wanted to know how to make myself appear more clean, kept and wellorganised at work. This year, I really want my clothes to speak for me and make a little effort in looking the part. Thanks, and I’ll check out the answer in the column,” Masedi T.

Hi Masedi.

Compliments of the new season to you, too!

This is good question because clothes really do speak for you before you can even introduce yourself. Anyway, looking polished has more to do with how you carry yourself, and the type of clothes you go for. Sometimes it’s all in how you mix and match your clothes! The kind of styling that offers looking clean and polished is associated with “less is more”, which is highly effective. That’s when you wear clothes that are muted in colour, neutral colours that provide the backdrop of anything stylish. You have to choose clothes that are minimal in design and are simple in form. Colours to consider are your khakis, navy blues, light blue shirts, white shirts, black suits, grey and navy. Make sure that you wear about two accessories and you let your outfit breath.

We live in unprecedented times where buying clothes regularly has become unattainable because of inflation. In light of that situation, I am offering these five tips to help you re-invent your style, that is, if you want to look more sophisticated and polished.

Tip 1: NEUTRALS, NAVY, GREYS, and WHITES OR ALL BLACK

These are the colours or hues you can go to for that clean, striking look. Neutrals add a clean, luxurious feel while all black adds a sophisticated feel.

Tip 2: GET THEM TAILORED

One size does not always fit all. Get your clothes tailored to your body specifications.

Tip 3: INVEST OR BUY TIMELESS PIECES

Your wardrobe should be 70 percent timeless classics (white shirt, tailored pants/ pencil skirt, blazer, a power suit) to mention a few and 30 percent fashion trends.

Tip 4: CUT ANY LOSE THREADS

There is nothing worse than loose or hanging need threads because they make any garment look cheap and of low quality.

Tip 5: INVEST IN PROPER FITTING UNDERGARMENT

Whatever you do, make sure that your garments are of the correct fit. Proper fit lines the garments nicely and gives everything effortless seams.

Tip 6: ACCESSORISE LESS

Accessories like a belt, a ring, stunning sunglasses, a minimalistic bag add pizzazz to an outfit and can make any outfit look expensive.

Tip 7: OPT FOR LUXE LOOKING FABRICS LIKE YOUR SATIN, TWEED, SILKS, and COTTON

They make any finishing look cleaner.
