ON TOP OF THE WORLD Chulu to represent BW at Miss little Global in KL

- BY PORTIA MLILO

Miss Little Global Botswana, Cherish Chulu, will travel to Malaysia next week to represent the country at the international finale in Kuala Lumpur

A Standard Six student at Mophane Primary school in Gaborone, 10-year-old Chulu won the local pageant last December to qualify for the global pageant to be held from the 2nd to the 6th of February.

Although she is excited about the trip, the little queen is facing challenges of lack funds to cover travel costs.

“I have been preparing for this world competition the whole month. I watch modelling channels on the internet to learn a few things. I have even changed my diet and stopped eating oily food to avoid gaining weight. I also drink a lot of water. The other thing I do is wear heels everyday after school as I walk around the house. My role models are my parents as they guide and give me the courage to battle life obstacles. I remember last year I did not do well in my first pageant of Miss Junior Idols and they encouraged me not to give up,” said Chulu, emphasising that her mother’s words; ‘Cherish, you are above and never beneath’, have always given her the feeling that she was ready to conquer the world.

The little queen further told The Voice in an interview that she has loved modelling from a young age and this was her second pageant to compete in and win. Modelling, she said, has helped her gain confidence, correct her posture as a young woman, improve her public speaking skills, as well improve her mental and general physical development.

Cherish’s father, Modisa Chulu, said this trip will cost P50,000 for travel and costumes. He said he has also hired a modelling expert, Thabiso Tabothiwa, to coach his daughter as she prepares for the world stage.

“I am still looking for sponsors, a few have promised to assist but I will make sure that she competes at this event. Beside modelling, we realised she is a good dancer so I hired a choreographer to sharpen her moves because there is also a talent show at the event, which will help her to score more marks. For talent, she will be showcasing our Kalanga culture and dancing Hosanna,” said the doting dad.
