THE BIG BROTHER EXPERIENCE

Media titans meet

- BY LEUNGO MOKGWATHI

BIG Brother is undoubtedly the biggest and most watched reality TV series in Africa. In 2023, for the first time in its history, we saw the merging of two small screen superpowers - Big Brother Naija and Big Brother Mzansi - launching the first ever Big Brother Titans. To celebrate this monumental season, DSTV hosted local media practitioners for an eventful night of Big Brother Media Titans Botswana this past Sunday.

“The Big Brother Media Titans event was all about recreating the Big Brother experience right here in Botswana. We selected individuals from different media houses, whom we felt would be engaged and excited to recreate some of the tasks we’ve seen on Big Brother all these years,” said DSTV Corporate Affairs Manager, Thembile Legwaila.

The star-studded affair was a night of fun, games, dance and massive entertainment featuring some of the media industry favourites. Among them were radio personalities: Loungo Pitse, DJ Gouveia, Kedi Molosiwa and Mdu tha Party. The world of print was represented by Gosego Motsumi, Sharon Mathala, Nancy Mokhua, Tlhabo Kgosiemang and The Voice’s very own, Leungo Mokgwathi, while the talented songstress, Dato Seiko, represented the content creators and social media influencers.

“We wanted to have a healthy mix of traditional media (print and radio) as well as social media personalities in the house. We chose individuals who were vastly different from each other because variety and diversity are important to us. We, of course, chose those with outgoing personalities as well as those who are a little more introverted as we wanted the interaction to be authentic and organic,” Legwaila explained.

CONTENT

According to Legwaila, the event was also an expression of appreciation of the media fraternity who have been invaluable partners to the DSTV brand. She added that the intent was to also give the media stars an opportunity to be entertained through DSTV content.

Feasting is an important ritual in every Big Brother house and this one was no exception. The phenomenal and ever beautiful local chef, Rachel Tlagae of Rachel’s Table, curated a divine meal which, as clearly evident from the cleared plates, seemed to have been thoroughly enjoyed by the housemates.

DSTV gave a special shout-out to locallyowned public relations agency, Bullsheep, for their role in making the event a success.

“We are committed to working hand-in-hand with local entities and they did a phenomenal job in pulling together. We also hosted the event at a locally-owned establishment, Caserio Farmhouse, as local empowerment is critical to us. Working with local partners to put together an event of this caliber always makes the experience more worthwhile. For us, the nod of success is when our guests are enjoying themselves and feel appreciated during their time with us. That is what we aim for when we host and the Media Titans event was no exception. Seeing everyone engaging with each other and with the content was a win for team Multichoice Botswana. We are looking forward to more engagements of this nature with the media in the future,” Legwaila concluded.

Gosego Motsumi of The Gazette Newspaper was, however, the most successful at the end of the night after scooping the P5 000 grand prize which was up for grabs.
