SUSPECTED COPPER CABLES THIEF NABBED

- BY GOFAONE KOOGOTSITSE

A 26-year-old suspected copper cable thief who pleaded with the court to pay P5,000 cash for bail was on Tuesday granted a taste of freedom before Molepolole Magistrates’ Court.

Suspected thief, Thabang Dube, was nabbed by the police after he fled the crime scene last Thursday (April 6th, 2023) at Khudumasebe cattle post near Sojwe in Kweneng District.

He was arrested following the police tip-off from a reliable source that there were some people burning cables at the said cattle post.

When he saw a police vehicle approaching from a distance, Dube and his companions - still on the run - reportedly fled the scene, leaving behind their two vehicles - a Toyota truck and Corolla - which have been seized as exhibits.

Using a service rifle, a police officer fired a warning shot in the air in an attempt to stop the fleeing suspects but they continued running until they disappeared in the bush where Dube was eventually arrested.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor, Inspector Thema Marumolo, has briefly explained to the court that he was left with three witnesses whose statements he was yet to record.

“I don’t have any objection with the accused being granted a conditional bail, one of the conditions being that he pays P5,000 cash,” said the police officer.

When given a chance to speak, Dube remorsefully said he did not mind paying the requested P5,000 and went on to promise to abide by the court orders.

Principal Magistrate, Solomon Setshedi, who seemed to have been impressed by Dube’s display of humility, granted him bail and ordered him to provide a surety binding himself with the amount of P1,000.

Dube was taken to prison to wait for a surety to assist in signing for his bail. He will be back in court for mention on May 29th, 2023.
