COP ACCUSED OF RAPING MURDER SUSPECT

- BY GOFAONE KOOGOTSITSE

A 28-year-old cop of Tshane Police Station, Constable Dellion Bryn Masalela, has reportedly raped a female murder suspect who was detained in Traffic

General Office on Sunday night.

The rape was allegedly reported at the same station on Tuesday morning to a female officer who escorted the 24-year-old victim of Lokhaneng ward, Kacgae village in Ghanzi District.

It is alleged that the victim arrived in Tshane on Sunday to appear for mention for her case of murder before Hukuntsi Magistrates’ Court, which was scheduled for Monday (May 22nd, 2023).

“Since there are only males at Tshane State Prison, the woman was taken to Tshane Police cells, which also turned out to have been occupied by males, so the police decided to detain her in Traffic General Office, which is near the Community Service Centre,” disclosed a source.

Later on, Constable Masalela, who was on duty, allegedly sneaked back to the office where the woman was detained and asked her if she did not want sex and the woman refused to have sex with him.

The sources disclosed that, during the same night, the constable went to the woman for the second time and found her deep in sleep and allegedly raped her.

Although Masalela is said to have threatened the woman not to disclose the secret to anyone, she, however, reported the crime to the female officer who was escorting her on Tuesday morning. She was later taken for medical examination at the hospital and transferred to Gaborone Women’s Prison.

Meanwhile, Botswana Police Service Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner, Dipheko Motube, has confirmed that the suspected rapist was arraigned today (Wednesday) before Hukuntsi Magistrates’ Court facing a single count of rape and was granted a conditional bail. His mention is scheduled for June 6th, 2023.
