A NEW BUZZ

Seanokeng Camp Festival to celebrate Bakgatla’s heritage

- BY LEUNGO MOKGWATHI

The Voice’s 30th celebrations hit a festive high in the great outdoors on 9th December, as the party heads to Ramotlabaki for the first-ofits-kind Seanokeng Camp Festival.

Event Coordinator, Tumelo Lekolwane, revealed the initiative is a collaboration between The Voice Newspaper, Indigenous Roots and Ramotlabaki Village Development Committee (VDC).

“We identified a gap in that there wasn’t any big festival which was unique to Kgatleng. In Kweneng, you have Dithubaruba, the Kalanga people have Domboshaba, and in Kgalagadi there’s the Khawa festival. So, we had the idea to host an event which would showcase and celebrate Bakgatla’s heritage in style,” he explained, describing Ramotlabaki as the perfect setting due to its stunning landscape, which is a sanctuary for antelopes, kudus and other wild animals.

“Not only that, it’s located

two hours away from the bustling streets of Gaborone, offering an escape from the city to wrap up your year with a well-deserved breather on the serene banks of the Limpopo River.”

Activities include: horseback rides, fishing contest, mokoro rides and quad bike adventures that lead to the spectacular meeting point of the Limpopo and Ngotwane rivers.

Highlighting the festival’s socio-economic contribution to Ramotlabaki, a village with less than 2,000 residents, VDC Chairperson, Tefo Paledi, said it offers a rare opportunity to empower small businesses and will certainly give a new face to the village.

“The proposal brought a lot of excitement to our small village; we are hoping that the traffic will eventually prompt developments in our area,” said Paledi, adding the village chief and elders have all endorsed the gig.

Tickets are available at tickito.thevoicebw.com, with tent packages starting at P650 and the VIP experience going for P2,900 per couple. If camping isn’t for you, you can still bask in the fun of various artists, dikhwaere and setswana dance and cuisine for only P100 Early Bird tickets or P250 for a place in the Golden Circle.
