Borneo Insider's Guide

Editor’s Note

-

At the time that I’m composing this Editor’s Note, things have fallen into disarray. The reason is, of course, COVID-19.

It seems like woeful bad luck that we had made the decision last year when there was not yet a hint of a global pandemic – to focus on transportation for our April-july 2020 issue. So while this issue covers visits to places around Borneo and one BIG Getaway to Japan, we will instead urge anyone reading this issue to please avoid traveling at this time. We are not advising anyone to leave their homes or their country, and we will especially advise everyone to practice social distancing until the situation has improved.

However, we hope you do hang on to this issue as hopefully one day when this global pandemic ceases being a problem, you’ll be able to realistically consider some of the options we’ve laid out for you here.

In Brunei and Sarawak, we focus on some fun ways to get to know your country, while we hit the railroad and choo-choo our way through Sabah on the North Borneo Railway. The Temburong Bridge has opened, and we talk about some interesting stops you can take on the road to Kota Kinabalu.

Hari Raya is just around the corner and we’ve come up with a Raya Ready special of goodies that you might need before we start celebrating. We’ve featured some of our favourite spots to get ready for this festive season, ranging from outfits and shoes to furniture and home appliances.

Until the next issue, we hope that everyone keeps themselves and their loved ones safe. Wash your hands. Stay away from crowds. Be selfless in this time of need. Keep yourself informed but make sure all information is verified from relevant sources. Don’t spread fake news. Stay healthy. And please don’t panic.
