Iskandar Curry House

-

They say the best murtabak can be found at Iskandar Curry House – the purveyor of most of Brunei’s favourite murtabak since it first opened its doors in Lambak many, many years ago. They’ve ventured out with a new branch located at One Riverside.

Its first location was based on function: squeezing in enough varieties of tables and chairs to accommodate the large crowds that come here. They definitely had more ideas about the interior with their second branch, and there is a decidedly kampong rustic feel to it. Vintage images of Brunei adorn the walls, and there’s no doubt that this is certainly a prettier version of the Iskandar Curry House than what we’re used to.

Yet thankfully, its interior doesn’t detract from the fact that this is a place for any selfrespecting curry head, and if you have never tried a murtabak from Iskandar Curry House before (likelihood: slim), this will certainly be a case of love at first whiff.

In case it wasn’t clear, when at Iskandar, eat murtabak. It comes with a choice of Beef Curry or Dalca and you can choose to have it with the full set of condiments (highly recommended). The condiments, namely acar, dhal with potatoes, corned beef and sardines, might sound like odd complements to your average murtabak, but at Iskandar’s, don’t judge it until you try it. Put all four of those condiments on your murtabak, ply it with curry, and dig in. With your hands. Getting messy is just part of the fun.

Murtabak variations in the menu include banana fillings, and egg and onion fillings. They also serve a mean dish of Nasi Lemak. And you should definitely try their nasi briyani and, our personal favourite, their Fish Head Curry.
