About Borneo Divers
In 1982, Borneo Divers became the first professional dive company in Borneo and were the first to introduce and pioneer the PADI-professional diving certification courses. Their pioneering dive operator is founded on two principles: conserving the environment and proper training.
While in Sipadan, they enforced policies to sustainably manage the resort, such as the use of biodegradable soap, a desalination plant to avoid digging up well water, and refusing to do laundry on the island. They also introduced activities such as coral gardening and turtle egg protection.
Upon the mandate to vacate Sipadan, Borneo Divers was the first to voluntarily leave, followed by Pulau Sipadan Resort. Clement recalls, “I must admit that this was the biggest sacrifice for Borneo Divers and it was ultimately the most difficult decision of my life. We left the island without a single cent of compensation, but we agreed to move because we wanted to protect the island and, ironically, not allow the late legend, Cousteau’s quote to come true for Sipadan.”
