Miffed Mourinho berates ‘football Einsteins’
MANCHESTER United manager Jose Mourinho has hit back at the “football Einsteins” who have criticised him during the club’s recent run of three straight defeats.
United stopped t he rot wit h a 3-1 w i n over t h i rd-t ier Nor t ha mpton Town in the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday after losing to Manchester Cit y, Feyenoord and Watford in the past week.
“I know that some football Einsteins – football is full of Einsteins – I know that they tried to delete 16 years of my career,” Mourinho told MUTV, United’s in-house television station.
“They tried to delete an unbelievable histor y of Man United footba l l club and to focus on a bad week with t hree bad results. But t hat’s t he new footba l l – it’s f ul l of Ei nstei ns,” t he Portuguese added.
“I can understand clearly the disappointment if t he fans are disappointed with the last week,” said Mourinho, who prev iously coached Europea n footba ll gia nts Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid
“I understa nd completely but I’m sure t hat wit h t he tea m going back home [against Premier League champions Leicester City on Saturday] they wi l l be behi nd t he tea m l i ke t hey a lways are.”
Meanwhile, former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan said it’s only a matter of time before underperforming midfielder Paul Pogba starts justifying his world-record price tag for Jose Mourinho’s lacklustre side.
Forlan, now playing for India’s Mumbai City FC, endured a torrid start to his Red Devils career but went on to become a fan favourite and believes that Frenchman Pogba will too.
Forlan said the signing from Juventus just needs a while to adapt from Italy to the English top flight.
