Giant-killers Lotte kick Leverkusen out of Cup

GIANT-KILLERS Sportfreunde Lotte claimed another top-flight scalp on Tuesday despite finishing their German Cup clash against Bayer Leverkusen with 10 men, winning 4-3 on penalties. Third division Lotte had already shocked Bundesliga Werder Bremen in the first round. Despite seeing defender Tim Wendel sent off on 79 minutes for a second yellow card, Lotte held on to a 2-2 draw after extra-time in the second round clash. Leverkusen were booed by their own fans. Director of sport Rudi Voller fumed: “This can’t be surpassed in terms of stupidity.”
