Tropical storm to bring heavy rains, high winds

- Khouth Sophak Chakrya

AFTER causing death and destruction in the Philippines, Tropical Storm Tembin is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to coastal provinces by Tuesday, as well as to the Kingdom’s border regions with Vietnam, a Ministry of Water Resources and Meteoro l o g y (MOWRAM) spokesman said yesterday.

“Certainly, it will destroy some farmers’ crops because this is the harvesting season, and it makes the heavy rain and strong winds but it will not cause flooding,” MOWRAM spokesman Chan Yutha said, advising that farmers should harvest their crops before the rains if possible.

According to Yutha, Tembin will lose intensity after crossing the South China Sea and making landfall inVietnam’s Mekong Delta region today, with heavy rains and winds affecting Cambodia by Tuesday.

A ministry statement released on Friday said Tembin’s effects would be felt through December 28, and warned fishermen and tourists refrain from sea-faring activities. “Coastal fishermen and the tourists should temporarily stop fishing and visiting the coastal islands or diving into the sea,” Yutha added.

The Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management predicts that on Tuesday, as the storm grazes Cambodia’s coastline, it will have sustained wind-speeds of 74 kilometres per hour.
