Calijuri stars as Boeung Ket shoot down Army

- HS Manjunath

BRAZILIAN Maycon Calijuri set up the first goal past the hour-mark and scored the second minutes later to ensure a 2-0 victory for Boeung Ket over rivals Ministry of National Defense at Olympic Stadium on Saturday evening as the Metfone C-League resumed after the Khmer New Year break.

Following their listless showing against visiting Ceres Negros in the AFC Cup just over a week ago, the defending champions were eager for a lift, and it couldn’t have been more timely.

Two brilliant one-handed saves from the Kingdom’s most capped interna- tional goalkeeper, Sou Yaty, kept Boeung Ket in the fight.

But once Samuel Ajayi, who sat out the Ceres game through a one match suspension for a red card, came on, Boeung Ket’s attack became sharper.

Boeung Ket soon began to assert themselves and Maycon played in a pass that Julius Oiboh drove home.

Army were then soon to suffer the knockout blow.

Ajayi split the Army defence to put Maycon clear on goal, and barely five feet from the goalline the Brazilian tapped in for what is likely one of the easiest goals of his career.

The victory brings Boeung Ket to the top of the table with 13 points from five games at least for the night, but NagaWorld, who were level with Boeung Ket at the start of gameweek 5, would stay level with the Blue Dragon if they were to beat Asia Euro United on Sunday evening.

In Saturday’s other matches, Commissary of National Police got the measure of Siem Reap-based Soltilo Angkor 2-1, while newly promoted Visakha FC, who suffered their first defeat before the break, rebounded with a 3-0 win over a Western Phnom Penh side still reeling from an 8-0 thrashing by Army in their previous match.
